A Journey Through the History of Social Media

Your Social Media Journey

Your Social Media Journey can be difficult or simple. Its how you approach it.

Have you ever wondered how social media began? Where did the idea come from? You may be surprised to learn that it’s been around much longer than sites like Myspace (talk about throwback!) and Facebook.

Today, we’re taking a journey through time to examine the history of social media, as well as its implications as part of modern society. Buckle up, here we go…

Early Communication Methods

Humans by nature are social beings. From the beginning of time, people have strived to find ways to communicate with each other over varying distances.

Let’s take a look at the advancement of early social communication in chronological order:

  1. Handwritten Letters – The very first way people communicated over long distances was by hand-delivering written letters. According to Small Business Trends, the earliest form of postal service was developed around 550 B.C.
  2. The Telegraph – Invented in 1792, this system provided a much faster method of delivery than before.
  3. The Pneumatic Post – Much like drive-through banking, this method utilized underground air tubes to get messages from person to person. It came about in 1865.
  4. Telephone and Radio – In the late 1800s, technology made long-distance communication faster and more efficient than ever. The ability for immediate interaction was something never before experienced by mankind.

The Age of the Internet

From the invention of the first super computers in the 1940s to the development of the earliest forms of the internet, technology really took off in the twentieth century.

By the 1980s, home computers were becoming increasingly common. And with that phenomenon, social media efforts became more sophisticated.

The first social media site was created in 1997 and was called Six Degrees. Next, blogging began to gain popularity in 1999. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Today’s Social Media

We’ve certainly come a long way since those first social media sites were developed. Today, there are more social platforms than ever, with many of them boasting the ability to be cross-linked. This modern technology allows mankind to be more connected to each other than ever. But it does so much more than that – it boosts the business to customer relationship like we never dreamed possible.

Social media provides an avenue for personalized, casual communication between marketers and consumers, helping consumers to get what they really need and businesses to grow toward success.

Google Authorship and Your Business

http://www.screencast.com/t/37WScvOGJUU

Google Authorship what is it? Is this something new and how is this going to help my business succeed? Well many people have been asking these questions of late as to how Google Authorship can help to enhance your local SEO (Search Engine Optimization). If you watch the video above you will see that it gives you a very Basic overview of what it is.

So does your business have a blog so that you can enhance your local SEO in the marketplace? Well a great explanation of Authorship can be found here on Google’s website and its also where you can go signup and register for it also. If you are not blogging I think that you should start blogging for your business because quit frankly the search engines love content that is legitimate and helps others. Many companies have been doing underhanded things that create back-links to their customers sites which in turn cause them to get blacklisted from Google and their rankings completely drop off the front page or all together.

However, with Google Authorship it allows you to make your content more custom to your business and to you as a brand. Imagine that you have some content on the Internet and it does not show who the author is. It would could look plain and dry and not very interesting. However, by implementing this on your website and Google Plus Profile  it can allow you to drive more traffic to your business and create a face behind the company.

Now wouldn’t that be better than to try and spam the system and get over on Google when you know you can’t? My only recommendation is to make sure that you have a photo with good quality because you don’t want your brand to be represented poorly. Here are a few steps for you

  1. Signup on Google Plus
  2. Create a Local Account for your business
  3. Start a WordPress Blog
  4. Install & Configure Yoast WordPress Plugin
  5. Optimize your blog and website for Keywords
  6. Blog, Blog, Blog
  7. Link your website to your Google Local + page.
