When a few guys from Church challenged me to participate in the Spartan Sprint a few years ago now, I don’t think any of us really expected what we got, and for me, how it would relate to Digital Marketing. I know personally speaking I learned so many lessons during that sprint and I want to share a few of them with you. With all of the jumping, crawling, climbing, throwing, rolling, and using muscles that I didn’t know I had helped me clarify a few things that I believe will help you or your Organization with your digital marketing efforts.
Digital Marketing way of life
In my ignorance about the Spartan Sprint, I didn’t train at all (not intentionally) but now that I’ve done it, I wish I had prepared properly for this race because I learned during the race that the 3+ miles that was advertised was more like 5+ which I was not expecting. Usually, you think “Oh another 2 miles is not that big of a deal”. Well after numerous obstacles, and frigid water, it wasn’t expected and I paid for it.
So how can we relate this to Digital Marketing?
Entrepreneurs, Business owners and Corporate Exec’s that are unfamiliar with the process of creating digital marketing strategy or campaigns really don’t expect the journey to be more than a few months, or difficult at all. Most clients look at Digital Marketing as something that needs no strategy and they typically want the Marketing agency to jump into (tactics), like running Facebook Ads, or Google Ads, without a strategy at all which is a HUGE no no, So you must prepare before you get started.
I took on the Spartan sprint just like some clients want to take on their marketing and that is haphazardly. So after becoming a Digital Marketer Certified Partner, and making sure that we are a part of a network of strategic digital marketers, I will now make sure that all of my clients going forward MUST have a Double your Sales discovery session to get a baseline for the digital strategy we are going to create for them.
There are going to be Obstacles
The obstacles that we faced were so tough, and they kept coming, and to be honest there was one particular obstacle where I was just flat out going to quit. We had to climb over a mud mound, into the water (it was 45 degrees), in the mud again, then under a wooden frame to the other side, which meant you had to go under the water to get to the other side, to be honest this almost killed me. This was the first time in my life that I had cramped up to the point where I could not move. I sat on the last mound while i watched person after person pass me by, and I could not do anything to help myself but take a break and let my body recover.
Well, its the same thing with your digital strategy. Sometimes you are going to have to stop and pivot. Your competitors are going to pass you down, you might loose some business, and your marketing efforts may seem hopeless. In this type of situation with your marketing when you feel like nothing is working, is the time when you should refine or create your digital marketing strategy, this is going to be your guide. Creating a customer journey worksheet, custom avatar to determine where you are going and which customer aligns with that product or service is critically important, its an absolute must!
Your Marketing Obstacles
So how does this relate? Well, in your marketing efforts you are going to face obstacles.
You are going to implement your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) efforts and nothing is going to happen immediately.
Then your website will start losing website traffic, then some people will unfollow you and unsubscribe from your mailing list, but these are obstacles that should be expected. If your Marketing Agency does not set the expectation upfront, that could be a mistake that you are just not prepared for.
I just want you to be aware that Online / Digital marketing needs a detail strategy that is properly planned out and executed with proper ways for tracking.
You can’t do it alone
To be totally honest with you, by this time in the sprint I had already known that finish line was really close, and we only had a few more obstacles to go and I kept repeating to myself that I HAVE to finish and it’s almost done. I would not have finished if I did not have Bobby, Keith, & David with me that day and pushing me to finish and complete the obstacles. The sheer determination to finish, and your friends cheering you on to the finish line is critically important to your success in a race like this. So you are going to face challenges every single day with some of your Marketing campaigns, but you need to have a solid strategy before you go into your 2020 marketing campaigns. At this point we are nearing the end of the 1st quarter of 2020 and you should have already had your digital marketing strategy in place. If you didn’t it’s ok, you can start now, but don’t just jump into marketing for yourself or your clients without a solid Marketing plan and strategy.
Don’t do Digital Marketing Alone
The same premise goes into effect here with your Marketing efforts, if you are an Entrepreneur or Solopreneur and you want to just kill it during this time my suggestion is to look for a Digital Marketing agency that can help you determine a few things about who you are trying to target.
- Who is my target audience, for each product or service
- How do I double my sales?
- How should I interact with customers along the customer journey
- How do I move someone from awareness to becoming a promoter of my business
Most Organizations should continue to focus on what they do best and that is running your business and making sure that you are generating leads via Business development efforts, and building the skills of your internal teams, or hiring a marketing agency to fulfill those goals.
